Carlos Cruz-Diez

Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, Venezuela, 1923 – Paris, 2019) is one of the central figures of twentieth-century kinetic and optical art. He trained at the School of Fine and Applied Arts in Caracas, where he later taught, while supporting himself as a press illustrator. His early work was rooted in social realism, but from 1951 he redirected his practice towards the physical behaviour of colour, convinced that art should be exploration rather than description.

In 1960 he moved to Paris, where he became part of the city’s circles of artistic renewal and joined the Galerie Denise René, the international epicentre of kinetic art. It was in this context that he developed the projects that would define his language: the Physichromies, the Chromatic Inductions, and Chromosaturation — works that do not represent colour but make it the event itself. His practice treats colour as an autonomous reality that unfolds in space and in the real time of the viewer’s gaze.

His work was recognised at landmark exhibitions including The Responsive Eye (MoMA, New York, 1965), the São Paulo Biennial — where he received the International Painting Prize in 1967 — and the 1970 Venice Biennale, where he represented Venezuela. Over the course of his career he exhibited in more than forty countries, and his work is held in collections and institutions across the world.
