If there ever was a famous legend, a legend that led the Spanish conquistadors and those who followed in their footsteps and their stories to the most daring adventures and even to madness and death, it was that of “El Dorado.”
For centuries, the search for that legendary city became an obsession and dream of sailors and conquistadors. It was also the motive and cause of extraordinary heroic deeds and the most dastardly acts. El Dorado is filled with noble epics and base passions, lofty ambitions and betrayals, acts of love and horrendous crimes, and so on. El Dorado is, in short, a faithful portrait of society, sometimes cruel, sometimes bitter, and sometimes endearing. But El Dorado is also a metaphor. It is also the search for happiness, for happiness through matter.
Matter (gold) thus becomes the desired object, capable of generating happiness. It is around this metaphor, around this idea of matter capable of creating emotion, that Imaginart Gallery brings together in this exhibition a series of young artists capable of demonstrating, through their language and their codes, the relevance of “El Dorado” as an example of the relentless pursuit of happiness.
