Diego Fernando Pietro

Painter

Diego Fernando Prieto (b. 1984, Ibagué, Colombia) is an artist and educator whose work explores the relationship between memory, dreams and reality.

From a young age, he showed a keen interest in painting, especially portraiture, drawing inspiration from collections of old photographs. This fascination with the past is reflected in his work, which depicts figures dressed in clothes from other eras, enveloped in enigmatic atmospheres. Prieto is known for creating unusual scenes that evoke the world of dreams. His paintings offer a profound reflection on beliefs, emotions, and rituals, challenging the coherence of what we consider “real.”

His black and white portraits capture his own perceptions and recurring dreams. He often incorporates symbolic elements, such as fish, which he associates with faith, belief, and spirituality.

This fusion of the fantastic in realistic environments, presented in a natural and everyday way, finds its roots in Magical Realism , a literary movement rooted in Latin American culture and led by authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa, which blurred the boundaries between the real and the imaginary.
