Richard Hambleton (b. 1952, Vancouver, Canada – d. 2017, New York, USA) was an urban artist and painter known as the “Godfather of Street Art.” His most famous work is the black silhouettes he painted on the streets of New York City during the 1980s, known as “Shadowmen.”
These figures evoked mysterious and threatening presences, and their work influenced the development of contemporary street art. Hambleton combined traditional painting with urban art, exploring themes of fear, anonymity, and existence.
