Keith Haring (born 1958, Pennsylvania) was an American artist and activist , primarily known as a painter and cartoonist . He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and grew up in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He died in New York City in 1990 .
Haring developed an unmistakable style characterized by bold lines, vivid colors, and dynamic figures, such as his iconic “radiant babies,” barking dogs, and dancing figures. His work emerged on the New York art scene during the 1980s, initially through street art in subway stations, where he drew with chalk on blank panels. Influenced by graffiti, pop art, and urban art, he used his work as a vehicle for social commentary, addressing themes such as racism, war, inequality, and the AIDS epidemic. Committed to activism, he founded the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989 to support organizations working with children and people affected by HIV. His legacy lives on in contemporary art and popular culture.
