Imaginart Gallery brings to Barcelona the photographs of Joel-Peter Witkin (New York, 1939). With a work that leaves no one indifferent, he is known for addressing themes such as death, sex, and pain. He is known for photographing corpses, dismembered body parts, and people living with physical variations that are far from normative. Through the recreation of classic paintings and scenes from art history, he seeks to praise and honor bodies that have historically been considered ominous.
His works can be found in such prominent collections as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the National Gallery in Washington, DC, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 1988, the Reina Sofía Art Center dedicated the most comprehensive exhibition ever to him. Despite receiving great international acclaim, the artist has been widely criticized and censored throughout his career.
