Jesús Rafael Soto

Jesús Rafael Soto (Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, 1923 – Paris, France, 2005) was one of the leading figures of kinetic art and a key figure in twentieth-century Latin American art.

After studying at the School of Fine and Applied Arts in Caracas, he moved to Paris in 1950, where he came into contact with the geometric abstraction movements that would profoundly shape his artistic practice. There, he began a pioneering exploration of movement, perception, and the relationship between artwork and viewer, becoming one of the foremost representatives of kinetic art alongside artists such as Victor Vasarely.

Through the repetition of lines, geometric structures, and suspended elements, Soto moved beyond the traditional two-dimensional surface of painting to create works that change according to the viewer’s movement. His celebrated Penetrables invite the public to physically enter and move through the artwork, dissolving the boundaries between art, space, and experience.

His work has been exhibited at major international institutions, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. He also completed numerous large-scale public commissions, integrating art into architecture and urban space.

In 1973, Soto helped establish the Jesús Soto Museum of Modern Art in his hometown of Ciudad Bolívar. Today, his work remains an essential reference for understanding the development of contemporary abstract, optical, and kinetic art.
